The book is an updated version of the successful 1985 edition written by Godfrey Laurence, now out of print. The new edition was written by David A Howells, with assistance from other members of the committee. The new edition expands the original book where research has revealed new information as well as filling in as much as possible the events in the intervening 25 years. There is more about the late Anglo-Saxon period, the manors of Shockerwick and Warleigh, some recent discoveries relating to St Swithun's church, the Baptist Chapel and the old Quaker burial ground that was removed when the Batheaston by-pass was built. The history of the various schools, both conventional and for children with learning difficulties is expanded. The chapter on roads has been largely rewritten and more maps have been included. There are now over 100 pages of text, 90 illustrations - most in colour - and the outline maps have been redrawn and new ones added. The book is priced £10 and available from the Bathford Community shop and the Oldfield Park Bookshop in Bath. The ISBN is 978-0-9510746-2-6. |
